Kurt Thoma
Artistic Director

When Kurt began Acting Up Theatre Company, with the help of Co-Founder Natascha McCuan, he had no idea what he was getting into. Kurt and Natascha were students at Kirtland Community College in Roscommon, MI when Managing Director & Instructor,Ron Koenig approached them with the idea of producing a dinner theatre. The play "Greater Tuna" was produced with Natascha serving as the Producer and Kurt as the Director. The rest of the cast & crew for this groud breaking production were Steve Coe, Suzen Rosa, Bobby McCuan & Natascha McCuan. During the creation of this first play, Natascha and Kurt formed Acting Up Theatre Company.

Kurt has been involved with theatre from the time he was 5 years old. Kurt, fondly remembers the first time he was on stage when he pushed an "adult" into a kiddie pool full of water. The audience laughed and cheered. To this day Kurt tries to re-capture that same laughter and applause and share it with as many people as possible. Through Acting Up's work at schools, libraries, festivals, 4-H clubs, Boy & Girl Scout troupes and civic organizations Kurt is pleased to share the same joy and excitement that he recieves from theatre.

While a student at Kirtland Community College Kurt served on the Cultural Events Committee, was a assistant stage technician at Kirtland Center for the performing arts, He acted in numerous plays, co-directed "DeathTrap," traveled to Russia to study art history, and was the first graduate with an Associates in Fine Arts Degree in Theatre in the history of KCC.

Thanks to the dedication, determination and hard work of Chad, Rachel, Suzen and Dean, Kurt has been able to pursue a variety of other faccets of the art world. This includes serving as the Director for campus arts at Northwood University in Cedar Hill, TX. while there he coordinated visits by world class artists and performers to the campus where they interacted with Northwood students and the communinity. He designed and constructed an art gallery where award winning artists from accross the nation displayed their art. He also conducted weekly theatre classes and directed a number of plays at the college.

Kurt then moved back to Michigan to accept the position of Education & Outreach Coordinator for Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. While there he continued to coordinate visits by world class artists. He also coordinated summer workshops, a college show choir, a Broadway trip to New York, NY, pre-show performers in the lobby before every mainstage event and he helped to plan an dinner and meet and greet evening with his idol Marcell Marceau.

Kurt currently lives in Dexter, MI and is the Technical Director for Three Men and a Tenor, a world traveling vocal group; he is a House Technician in Hill Auditorium, Power Center for the Performing Arts, Mendelsohn Theatre, and Rackham Theatre at University of Michigan; and he is a member of IATSE Local 395 in Ann Arbor, MI.
